Latthapon Korkiatarkul
b. 1988, Bangkok, Thailand
Lives and works in Bangkok, Thailand
Korkiatarkul creates minimal works of striking subtlety, using abstraction as a ground for fluid subversion and projection. His process departs from conventional structures of drawing, painting, and sculpture: supporting elements such as walls and pedestals become the focal core of his pieces, as do humble materials like graphite and paper. He distills and inverts sequences of production—at times painting on the reverse of canvases or soaking paper in oil before introducing color.
By negating compositional hierarchy and grandeur, even the most inconsequential remnants enter his methodology: stray paintbrush hairs, cat fur, pencil shavings, and dust, alongside the light and wind that move through his studio. Embracing this totality, Korkiatarkul continually renegotiates human conceptions of value. Through processes of laborious transformation and redefinition, he interrogates the social construction of objects. Presenting visual voids, he sheds dense contextual baggage, inviting viewers to project their own searches for knowledge and liberation onto each work.
