Supawich Weesapen
b. 1997, Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand
Lives and works in Bangkok, Thailand
Supawich Weesapen received his BFA in Painting from Silpakorn University. He explores the intersections of natural, mythical, and cyber phenomena, creating works of enigmatic energy and radiance. Born into the digital age, the aesthetics of the virtual world come to the fore in his practice: his paintings allude to RGB colour effects, which have been identified as the subconsciously engrained palette of our current age. While probing our technological present and future, Weesapen also looks towards the spiritual and sublime. He references age-old symbols, omens, and legends, such as cosmological occurrences and origin tales. Simultaneously delving into the tangible and unknown, he draws out the conceptual and visual entanglements of our surrounding environments and inner worlds. He gives form to infinite and amorphous auras through the traditional medium of oil paint, deftly toying with opacity, saturation, and the art historical techniques of chiaroscuro. Ultimately, Weesapen weaves together asynchronous realities and paradigms, finding new perspectives of contemporary being and relating. Weesapen’s debut solo exhibition, The Comet and the Nostalgic Souls, was held at Nova Contemporary in 2023. Recent exhibitions include Made in the Dark, Clearing Gallery, New York (2023), All is Prettier. Part II: Arrival, 100 Tonson Foundation, Bangkok (2023), Hexagon, Nova Contemporary (2022), and Qi , Nova Contemporary, Bangkok (2020). His works belong to the collections of X Museum, Beijing, Samdani Art Foundation, Dhaka, and 129 Art Museum, Nakhon Ratchasima.
