S.E.A. Focus 2022 Curate Theme: Chance Constellations

Through the millennia, constellations have helped humankind to navigate, orientate and locate our place in the world, Constellations are ultimately images born of the human imagination, but these star patterns not random; they express how we choose to align in joining the dots.

Complied to seek anchor points in the upheaval of the present day, We reach out to those near and kindred, reaffirming connections. Contemporary Southeast Asian art has long linked across diverse cultural influences and the SEA, Focus 2022 exhibition draws together luminous artistic talents of this region, Within these lands, the relationships and connections We make - and hold - are indeed, our constellations.

Conjoined with the notion of "chance", constellations spark with the potential of opportunity and creation. Connecting with others, we align our own stars,

S.E.A Focus Official Fringe Programme at Projector X

This programme brings together a constellation of artist videos and films from Southeast Asia, showcasing the rich diversity of works by contemporary visual artists working with the moving image.

From mystical mountains in the Philippines to the mysterious disappearance of a Thai tycoon; dancing teabags and running neon dogs; Hollywood depictions of the Vietnam war and wedding rituals in Singapore, as well as many others, the videos take on a spectrum of topics. These subjects span from the socio-historical, to formal and aesthetic concerns, in modes that include animation, documentary, the experimental and cinematic form.

Many of the visual artists presented here hold creative interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary practices, working across media such as painting, photography, sculpture and installation. Collectively, this selection of more than 20 artist videos offers an insight into the sumptuous concepts, styles and ideas in the contemporary art of Southeast Asia.
