Chetsada Phuwiang in the Bangkok Art Biennale 2026

Bangkok Art Biennale

Nova Contemporary is pleased to announce that Chetsada Phuwiang will be included as one of the artists in the Bangkok Art Biennale 2026, on view from 29 October 2026 to 28 February 2027. Under the theme Angels and Mara, the biennale’s fifth edition brings 72 Thai and international artists into dialogue with the capital's heritage, spirituality, urban life, and creative future. Phuwiang’s work will be exhibited at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC).

Angels and Mara uncovers the ontological meaning of the dualities of light and conflict, and hope and despair. Artists are invited to expose themselves to the perceptions that define their existence and engage in a profound exploration toward understanding the transformation of life in the modern world and urban landscape.

Phuwiang explores the theme through his own complicated relationship with urban nightlife, a realm often stigmatized by society. Deviating from conventional moral dilemmas, he views nightlife as a space of freedom to express his identity. Within this atmosphere, the transience of relationships, emotions, and desires gives rise to a fluid sense of self. Using diverse mediums such as sand, oil, acrylic, and airbrush, Phuwiang captures layers of sensuality and relational self. His blurred body fragments dissolve the boundaries between the figurative and the abstract, passing along fluid thresholds.
